To most people the word gender means being either male or female. Most people don’t even realize that there can be more than two genders. Besides being male or female some people can also be intersex. Intersex means the person is neither male nor female. At birth 5 out of 5000 babies are born as intersex. Before many people knew about this, intersex people were becoming part of sex discrimination. A male has XY chromosomes and a female has XX chromosomes. Intersex babies are born with either XXY, XXX, or XO chromosomes. The presence of one or two additional chromosomes in a male XXY or XXX is Keinfellers syndrome. People with Keinfellers syndrome are usually sterile and cannot produce sperm, but since they have a penis they are considered male.
