Abstract
In this paper, I will be reviewing two articles that focus on organizational culture. The first article points out that if we expand our conceptualization of culture change to include both planned change and unplanned change, then it is at least possible to be certain that downsizing is a method for culture change. The symbolic aspects of culture change associated with downsizing should not be disregarded. The political aspects of culture change associated with downsizing are also quite dramatic.
The second article explores the hypothesis that individuals attempt to change the culture of their organizations to fit their own personality preferences. Opportunities, motives, and anecdotes describing the efforts of individuals to change their organization's culture are presented.
