Integration and its Effect on High School Athletics
Based on a true story, Remember the Titans is a film about the first integrated high school football team in the early 1970s. While football is part of the storyline, this movie depicts a socially conscious demonstration about racism in the south. The film’s racial manner gives football more meaning and power.
T.C. Williams High School, the first integrated high school, named in honor of a former Superintendent of Schools, opened its doors in 1965. Due to the desegregation of Alexandria, Virginia’s public school system in 1959, T.C. Williams now has one of the most diverse student bodies in America and has grown to be one of the most respected public high schools in the country.
