INNOCENCE LOST (To Kill A Mockingbird)

“’Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers’”(74). This quote from Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is shockingly said by an eight-year-old child to one of his peers. The novel takes place in 1930s Alabama in the town of Maycomb, which is currently suffering from “The Great Depression.” Unfortunately, the occupants of Maycomb show much prejudice to African-Americans within the novel. Lee’s work displays the cruel behavior of this eccentric town, which helps readers realize the unnecessary abuse African-Americans suffered in the past.
The villain in the novel is the most blatant example of racism. While other characters are prejudice, Bob Ewell goes a step further. Beginning with his false accusation of the rape of his daughter by Tom Robinson, who is African-American, Ewell steps in to disgust the reader and dignify racism in the south.
