Sports Related Head Injuries



Since school sports season is here I
thought I should write about sports related
head injuries. Also since October is National
Brain Injury Awareness Month, I thought it
would be appropriate.

Most sports related head injuries result in
brain damage. I read that each year there are
about 2 million people that get head injuries.
Most of these people require hospitalization.
Most head injuries are mild and the symptoms
usually will disappear over time.

Some symptoms are: shortened attention
span, motor, perceptual, speech, and language
deficits. Other symptoms include social
difficulties, sleep difficulty, and personality
changes.

Some people think that in order to have a
concussion you have to be unconscious. This is
not true. A concussion is a change in a
person’s mental state that comes from being hit...
