Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my classmates about alcoholism, the causes of, the effects of, and the treatment of this disease.
Introduction
Attention Getting Material: According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, about 43% of U.S. adults --76 million people—have been exposed to alcoholism in the family. They either grew up with or married an alcoholic or a problem drinker.
Central Idea Statement: Alcoholism is not the same as being drunk. A person may get drunk occasionally, but that does not make them an alcoholic.
Main Preview Statement: Let’s begin with what is alcoholism? Then we will discuss some developmental information on alcoholism. Later we will explore the effects of alcoholism. Finally, this speech will end with the various treatments of alcoholism.
Transition into first main point: So what exactly is alcoholism?
