The Indian primary aluminium players as integrated producers have the facilities encompassing the entire gamut of aluminium production. These range from mining bauxite, production of alumina from bauxite in an alumina refinery, smelting of alumina into aluminium metal and finally its conversion into downstream products. The abundant supply of raw material and access to captive power and cheap labour has made these players one of the lowest cost producers in the world. As a result they are also in a position to offer the primary metal at a fairly competitive price to the downstream segment. Almost all of these primary players have extended their product line and have engaged themselves in the manufacture of semi-fabricated downstream products. Thus they are using their own captive aluminium production and enjoying the benefits of the high value addition involved in the manufacture of the downstream aluminium products.
