Need identified:
Zachary was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in September of 2002. He must check his blood sugars before meals and at bedtime. He also needs to check his blood sugars when he feels symptomatic, or as symptoms are reported by other staff members. Zachary takes scheduled NPH insulin BID, and also requires Humalog insulin prior to his meals. Because of his insulin intake, he is at risk for developing Hypoglycemic episodes through out the day. He must monitor his intake of food, insulin and his activity to avoid highs and lows in his blood sugar readings. A dangerous diagnosis of high blood sugars is Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Some symptoms to watch for are; breathing difficulties, confusion, frequent thirst and urination, and drowsiness to name a few.
