In what ways did Enlightenment thinkers build on or make use of the ideas of Newton and Locke?

Without the ideas of Newton and Locke, Enlightenment thinkers would not have been able to come up to the conclusions that they have done. Through the ideas of Newton and Locke, Enlightenment thinkers came upon modern beliefs such as the ability of natural science and reason to explain every aspect of life, and also that the creation of better societies and people is possible.
