In The Bedroom, a movie that speaks through symbolism and character portrayals retains a realistic feel that every audience member can relate to. This film is a rare tearjerker and every emotion is experienced throughout the entire film. The pace and direct dialogue of the film complements the fine acting and directing.
In The Bedroom is set in a small seaside town in Maine where town doctor Matt Fowler (Tom Wilkinson), his music teacher wife, Ruth (Sissy Spacek), and their only child Frank (Nick Stahl) are enjoying their last summer together before Frank heads off to architecture school. The family’s close and loving relationship is threatened when Frank becomes involved with Natalie, (Marisa Tomei), a single mother who has an explosively violent ex-husband Richard (William Mapother) who will not leave her alone. This situation leads to an unexpected and tragic outcome that leaves each person choosing how to grieve with life’s tragic disruptions.
