The premise of the book is that Earth is expecting an attack by aliens within a few years,

and the government sets up a special school for gifted children on a sort of space station. “The

place was so expensive. Huge, to hold thousands of kids and teachers and staff and crew. As

expensive as a ship of fleet, surely. And of it to train little children” (Card 134) The school's

mission is to train the children in military tactics to become commanders to fight off the

alien race call the “Buggers”. The most brilliant of these young recruits is Ender Wiggin, a very

gifted little boy who is taken from his family (mainly: Valentine, his loving older sister, and Peter,
