Kansas entered the United States as the 34th State on January 29, 1869. The word “Konza” means “People of South Wind” which was originated into the word Kansas. Kansas is best known for the nick name “The Sunflower State”. However, the state is also sometimes referred to as “The Wheat State” or “The Bread Basket of America”. The state motto is “Ad Astra Per Aspera” which means “To the Stars through difficulty”. The state flower is the Native Sun Flower which was adopted in 1903. The State Tree is the Cottonwood which was adopted in 1937. The State Bird is the Western Meadowlark which was also adopted in 1937. The States Song is Home on the Range which was adopted in 1947 by Dr. Brewster Higley. The State Amphibian is the Barred Tiger Salamander. The State Reptile is the Ornate Box Turtle which was adopted in 1986. The State Insect is the original HoneyBee adopted in 1976. The State Animal is the American Buffalo or Bison adopted in 1955.
