The Iberian Peninsula


The Iberian Peninsula is separated from the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees. The Pyrenees form the northeast edge of the peninsula, connecting it to the rest of Europe. It is located in the extreme southwest of Europe. It is bordered on the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea, and on the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean. It is comprised of both Portugal and Spain, and it is dominated by the Meseta which covers about two thirds of the peninsula. Coastal lowlands, the site of major industrial cities, surround the primary agrarian-oriented Meseta. The Iberian Peninsula has cold winters, hot summer, and very little rainfall. There are five rivers that drain the peninsula.
