Additionally, research has shown that there is a relationship between mothers’ attachment representations and the attachment styles of their children. However, it is important to note that infant characteristics may affect a mother’s ability to be sensitive and responsive even if she has a secure attachment style. For example, an autonomous mother who is sensitive and responsive in her caregiving, may have a child with a difficult temperament. Over time this may have an effect on the mother’s ability to provide sensitive and responsive caregiving for her child. One rather extreme example of this is mothers’ of autistic children.
