Nepal’s Education

Nepal’s education was once limited to only the upper class. This was from 1846 to 1951, when Nepal was under the rule of the Rana family. Nepal later established a new education system with free primary education for all children after the 1951 revolution. (No other levels of education are free.) Primary school lasts five years, for students age 6-11. Almost all the boys of Nepal who are of age enroll in primary school, however only about 11% of girls who are of age are enrolled. After primary school is secondary school, which is divided into the two year “lower secondary” school, for students age 11-13, and the three year “upper secondary” school, for students age 13-16.
