In the article entitled “These Standards are Worth the Weight,” the history of weight standards is discussed. The development of the metric system began in 1790 and was first adopted by the French. This system defined what a second was and later, the speed of light. This scheme established a strong standard for many things, the strongest being the kilogram. It has not changed since it was originally established, but scientists are searching for a better and more modern way of defining weight.
