Hydrogen Spectrum

In this lab we are observing the discontinuous spectrum of light of hydrogen to calculate the wave length of its spectral lines and to gain some insight into the origin of spectral lines and their relationship with the structure of atom. This experiment was also done by Bohr, who used it to gather insight of atom for his model of atom which was called the solar system model of atom. Bohr passed high electric voltage through a hydrogen discharge tube and it created a discontinuous spectrum of light, the 4 colors that were seen in this discontinuous spectrum of light were red blue indigo and violet. Bohr hypothesized that these colors were the energy given off by electrons when jump from higher energy level to a lower energy level, and different colors were emitted when electrons jump from a higher shell to a much lower shell, for eg, from 4th energy level to the frist energy level.
