Howard Florey

Birth:
Howard Florey was born in Malvern, Adelaide on the 24th of September 1898. He was the only son of Joseph and Bertha Florey.


Family:
Howard Florey had 4 older sisters, Charlotte, Anne, Hilda and Valetta.

Upbringing:
Howard grew up in comfortable surroundings. His farther Joseph was a wealthy shoe manufacturer.

Education:
In 1906 the Florey family moved to Mitcham to live. Howard began his education at Miss Thornborugh’s kindergarten. He rode a horse-drawn tram to and from kindergarten each day. From 1908 to 1910, Howard attended Kyre College in Unley Park. He then attended Saint Peters College until 1916. Howard showed both academic and sporting talent from the time he started school. He showed leadership skills becoming a Prefect in 1915 and Head Prefect in 1916. He received numerous sporting and academic prizes throughout his schooling and obtained scholarships to attend...
