How does this chapter show that the boys are caught between civilisation and savagery, and which does it suggest will be the more attractive choice?

Throughout the book the boys are torn between the here and now and their past. It still has an influence over them and therefore influences their decisions and actions. The island may have been a more brutal place if it wasn’t for their past lives of order and knowledge of right and wrong.
The littl’uns are bullied by the older boys. This can be seen when ‘Roger led the way through the castles, kicking them over…Maurice followed, laughing, adding to the destruction.’ This shows how the younger boys are treated by the big’uns on the island. However, Maurice was feeling guilty about throwing sand into Percival’s eye because ‘in his other life he would have received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand.’ He is still dwelling on his ‘other life’ though it didn’t stop him it made him feel ashamed.
