How does Eliot illustrate his themes in his poems?

In the poem “Rhapsody on a Windy night” the main themes are Lack of Control, Our Possession of Sordid Souls and Disillusionment with Life. Generally speaking, the poem is a sordid and pessimistic view of life and Eliot presents this through the use of imagery, irony, contrast and juxtaposition.

Eliot relies heavily on the use of imagery to convey his theme of Lack of Control. He wants the readers to see that people do not have any control over their memories, which becomes a metaphor for the lack of control we suffer in life in general. Similes, repetition and juxtaposition are also used to convey this idea. Eliot presents the uncontrollable release of memories through the juxtaposition of a number of unrelated images.
