How did Olmsted,s Work sifnal an emergent ecological sensibility?

How did Olmsted’s work, for instance his design of the ‛Emerald Necklace’, signal an emergent ecological sensibility?


An ecological sensibility should be regarded as a prerequisite for any design of a landscape today. Olmsted didn’t just create the profession of ‘Landscape Architecture’, but he created a style of designing that was sensitive to the natural environment, sensitive to the needs of the community and sensitive to the eye. An ecological sensibility sounds like a simple and easy way of designing. It isn’t an overly complicated way of thinking and designing, but to put into practice these ideas and values, that will please all of the different groups is hard. Olmsted’s principles of design should still be used today by landscape architects. Designers should use the natural environment as inspirations for designs and should set out to achieve the most ecologically sensible design.
