House on Mango Street

The House on Mango Street brought up many very important issues dealing with the life of a young Latino girl in Chicago. Growing up in the '50's and '60's made contentment with what existed for you within this community very difficult- you always wanted more, something better. It was the extension of the American Dream. However, in this place, at this time, that was not a possibility. This was true in many other places, as well, showing a well-established precident for the Civil Rights Movement that was to occur not long after. The experiences that Esperanza and the rest of the people on Mango street had, throughout this book, seemed like they were adding gasoline to sparks that ended up exploding or on the brinkof explosion by the end. A Civil Rights Revolution had to occur.
