House on Mango Street Critical Response

The House on Mango Street is a well written novel by Sandra Cisneros, a local color writer. The characterization Miss Cisneros uses to create the characters for the readers, especially Esperanza, is done so well and real that some of the situations can be applied to everyday experiences. Also the tone and style she uses to portray the story makes it easy to relate to everyday difficulties of children today. Although some symbols are more obvious that others, the symbol of shoes isn't so obvious. I think the image of a shoe in each vignette symbolized the character's personality/trait or feeling at that specific moment.
While reading the vignette "The Family of Little Feet" the feet of each family member is described as if describing who each of them were. For instance, grandma used to wear high heels that made her wobble, but she wore them anyways because they were pretty. That right there shows that grandma was stubborn.
