Women in The House on Mango Street
Many women feel entrapped by other people. In The House on Mango Street, the author, Sandra Cisneros, implies that women and girls on Mango Street don’t have many rights. The main character, Esperanza, doesn’t want to belong to other people. On Mango Street, females, including wives, mothers, and daughters, are dominated by others.
In Cisneros’ novel, wives are controlled by their husbands. They are not free to make their own decisions, or move toward their own futures. Esperanza tells about her grandmother, who sat at a window ever since her marriage. “My great-grandmother. I would’ve liked to have known her, a wild horse of a woman, so wild she wouldn’t marry. Until my great-grandfather threw a sack over her head and carried her off. “ (pg 10,11) Also in the book, some wives are beaten regularly by their husbands, but they stay with them through it all.
