Horseback riding is a sport

Many believe that equestrians are not considered athletes, and that horseback riding is not rigorous enough an activity to require any physical ability; thus is not a sport. Those who think this obviously have not really ridden a horse.
There are many different styles of riding, and the amount of physical ability increases or decreases depending on what type of riding one wants to pursue. For the most part, any type of riding more involved than trail riding does require much use of leg, back, stomach and arm and shoulder muscles. Many of which are not used in any other sport or physical activity.
Riders who excel in the sport are the ones who are the most dedicated and physically fit. Riders must be mentally on top of every move their horse makes, and how to get the horse to do whatever they are required to do with much finesse. Equestrians must be as mentally acute as they are physically.
