Homework: What’s the Point?
The American Psychological Association (APA) states, “The more homework students complete, especially from grades six to twelve, the better they do in school, according to recent research.” The articles, “Yes Johnny, Doing Your Homework is Important” by the APA and “What's the Right Amount of Homework?” by Judy Molland explore recent research as well as people’s attitudes towards homework.
The purpose of homework is to reinforce what a student learned in class, it should not be used as punishment or because something was not finished in class. Both articles focus on the different levels of schooling and the importance of homework in each level. In high school, students who regularly do homework outperform those who do not, as measured by standardized tests and grades. In middle school, homework is half as effective, and in elementary school it has no apparent measurable effect on achievement (Molland). If homework...
