The goal of coaching should be how to play the game - winning, losing, and everything in between. Many coaches understand the drive and need to win, but not all understand the cost and sacrifice involved to win on and off the field. Coaches should show by example how best to play the game. There are 3 different stereotypes of coaches - but the best coach knows how to be all 3 at the same time.
Perhaps the coach stereotype seen most often in the media, and all too often in real life is the coach who communicates winning at all costs. Not only does this attitude short circuit the ability of the players to enjoy the game, but it robs the event of the fun which should accompany winning. While these players learn what it means to push past barriers, they often fail to distinguish between barriers, and the unchangeable facts of life. No one can win every time all the time.
