Iain Crichton Smith writes the short story called “home”. The story is about a man struggling with inner conflict caused by his expectations of his situation being very different from reality when he returns to where he used to live.

The story begins with Mr Jackson returning to Glasgow after leaving 35 years ago and moving to Africa. He is convinced that Scotland is still his home and is looking forward to showing everyone how well he has done. The reality that most things that he remembers and the people he knew are all gone. After a conflict with some youths he begins to realize that his real home is back in Africa not in Scotland where he no longer feels comfortable or welcome.

We know immediately that Mr Jackson is confident and wealthy:

“The black polished car drew up outside the brown tenement and he rested for a moment his hands still on the wheel…He looked both competent and hard.”
