Home Before Morning

Home Before Morning: The Story of an Army Nurse in Vietnam by Lynda Van Devanter was written in 1983 after a personal thirteen-year mental battle. Van Devanter has seen the most horrifying aspects of the Vietnam War and describes them in detail in this book. Van Devanter takes us through the beginning when she was just starting nursing school at Mercy hospital to the day when she caught her Freedom Bird home, through the hard years that followed. This book was intended to be therapeutic for Van Devanter, but also to let others know what the Vietnam Vets had to go through in their day-to-day lives.
Home Before Morning starts off in Arlington where Devanter and her best friend Barbara from nursing school live. The women had already enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and were preparing to spend the next two months driving to San Francisco where their orders required them to be.
