Without History, the mistakes that were made in the past will be repeated over and over again. Through history, the reader is taken through time, to have a better grasp of how the present came to be. In her essay, In Search of Our Mothers’ Garden, Alice Walker takes advantage of the past and previous writers to demonstrate her skills in relating to the reader so they can better understand her beliefs.
Walker in her essay starts to bring the reader into her perspective by using the poet, Jean Toomer’s experience in the south during the 1920’s. Toomer starts the reader with the perspective of the 20s in which black women were considered “the mule of the world.” (740) Toomer speaks of how black women carried so many riches that went to waste as they “entered loveless marriages.” With her use of Toomer, Walker gives strength to her arguments by proving that this is not only her opinion on the status of Black Women but also th...
