Reality Check
In “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker tells a story of a mother’s conflicted relationship with her daughter. “Everyday Use” tells how a mother gradually rejects the superficial values of her older, successful daughter.
Dee, is introduced as Mrs. Johnson’s older daughter, she is very different than Mrs. Johnson and her other daughter Maggie. Dee is a different girl than her mother and sister. She is in the newer era than her family. She is a pretty girl and she is very out-going. Dee seems to think that she is a lot better than her family because she is a woman who lives a different lifestyle. She does not give her family respect because of the way they are and there lifestyle. Dee does not respect this and feels that her family should change there ways. She changes her name to Wangero.
