John Steinbeck once said, “It is the responsibility of the writer to expose our many grievous faults and failures and to hold up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams, for the purpose of improvement.” This quote can be interpreted to mean that it is the author’s job to show the reader their mistakes and flaws and through the writer’s work, show the reader how they can improve and better themselves. This critical lens is true because readers can find themselves more easily relating to the situations and actions of characters in a work of literature. This is proven throughout John Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace.
An example that proves the above quote correct involves the literary element of irony. Finny is involved in a snowball fight after his leg is injured. Gene warns him to be cautious with it, and Phineas promises that he will be extremely careful and will keep his leg protected. After the “trial” occurs...
