Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley Kent on, September 21, 1866. He is said to be the father of science fiction. His parents were shopkeepers and his father was a professional cricket player until he broke his leg. In 1883 Wells became a teacher at Midhurst Grammar School. However, in 1887 he lost interest in school and left. In 1891 he settled down in London and married his cousin Isabel. In 1893 Wells became a professional writer. He divorced his wife and married his pupil Amy Catherine. His first major fiction novel was The Time Machine which he wrote in 1895. During the time Wells spent writing this novel he was overly concerned with the fate of our society. He was also a member of the prestigious Fabian Society which was a group of philosophers in London. In the late 1930’s Wells had an obsession that our society was on the brink disaster.
