Hester's Secrets
The Scarlet Letter is filled with secrets, public embarrassment, and also conflicts. During this time, people were different and had to abide by the ways of society. In this book there are some secrets that carry the reader into the story. Because of the strict society and gossip going around, the characters think twice about what they say. Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth, and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale instill secrets throughout the story. The secrets that these characters have create conflicts between each other. The story starts out with Hester who receives community punishment for committing adultery. Hester is put through humiliation on a scaffold. All the intense embarrassment had an impact on her, which most likely keeps her from telling others personal things. Hester has the biggest secret out of all the characters that were going to analyze, and because she carries it on, the secrets are destructive and have harmed some of the characters.
