Hermann Hesse

Born in 1877 in Calw, Germany, Hermann Hesse was raised in a missionary household where he was brought up to become a cleric. However, a religious crisis led him to flee the Maulbrom seminary in 1892, and after a failed suicide attempt and expulsion from high school, young Hesse worked in bookshops for several years. He wrote his first novel, Peter Camenzind, in 1904 and followed it with Beneath the Wheel (1906), Hesse’s personal attack on the educational system of his time.
