Herencia


“Herencia” is a book full of stories coming from a variety of different view points based on the time within this cultural fusion that is taking place over an amount of time. “The Account” by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is the first known account in Chicana/o history. His experience starts out with a conflict and then turns into a good relationship. The first encounter with the Indigenous peoples were of them attacking de Vaca’s group because they had taken captive some of the Indigenous women and children. Later though in his account he tells how the Indians helped them in a time of dire need. Alvar stated: “They felt such great pain and pity at seeing us in such a state that they all began to cry so loudly and sincerely that they could be heard from afar.” (“Herencia” 37) And it is in his account that we see a fear of the other overcome and a relationship that many Chicana/o’s are proud of today.
