Hubs and Switches

Hubs and switches are both used to connect PC’s in a network together.

A Hub connects all the computers in a network to each other at one point (crossroad) and therefore only one piece of data can pass this point at once or else a collision would take place. This results in the PC’s on the network having to go through a routine to resolve these collisions. This routine involves sending the data and listening for a collision. If a collision is detected then the data is resent. When a few pieces of information are sent at once, the result is a lot of collisions and slower transfer speeds. This makes the network very slow and inefficient.
