This paper traces the changing constitution of wilderness in two books by Sharon Butala, The Perfection of the Morning (1994) and Wild Stone Heart (2000), arguing that Butala¡¦s narrative moves from a reductive ¡§wilderness plot¡¨ to a more inclusive ¡§deep map.¡¨ Where the former book constructs prairie space through essentialized divisions between nature and culture, urban and rural, Wild Stone Heart depicts how even ¡§wilderness¡¨ is overwritten by cultural and political forces.
