The cane toads were brought into Australia in 1935. Their initial population was only 102 toads. They were brought to Australia to control scarab beetles that were pestering the sugar cane plants in the area. These toads large amphibians with dry, warty skin. They have webbed feet and bony heads. They come in many different colors such as gray, yellowish, green –brown or red-brown. Younger toads however, are smooth with dark skin. Tadpoles or baby toads are black and shiny with thin tails. The cane toad are active at night in warm months of the year. During the day they usually hide in damp crevices or underneath logs or other wildlife. They can survive in temperatures ranging from five degrees Celsius to forty degrees Celsius. Cane toads will eat basically anything they can swallow including; live insects, small mammals, smaller toads, household scraps, marine life and pet food. Toad tadpoles eat algae and cane toad eggs. Cane toads start to mate in after the first summer storm...
