A family system is defined as a collective whole entity made up of individual parts plus the way they function together. (Schwartz & Nichols, 2004). The two theoretical approaches that will be discussed are the Bowenian and the Structural school of family therapy.
The main found of the Bowenian Family System Therapy was Murray Bowen. According to Schwartz & Nichols (2004) Bowen systems theory describes the family as a multigenerational network of relationships, which combines individuality and togetherness. There are six concepts affiliated with the Bowen Family Systems therapy which consists of:
Differentiation of self
Triangles
Nuclear Family
Emotional Process
Multigenerational Transmission Process
Sibling Position
