“The Christian Scriptures reflect the ancient Hebrew picture of the world with God Dwelling above the firmament” (pg. 113 Living religion 2nd edition.) After death people who are able to meet god will be transformed to be like God in heavenly happiness this is also called ‘eternal life’ and according to catholic belief you can only reach heaven after death and only for those who see God clearly and immediately after death. If this is not the case a person will need to spend time in purgatory where they will be purified and then move into a eternal life of happiness.
