Harro

The three poems that I will be discussing are “Digging”, “The Ex-Basketball Player”, and “how there in the plaid light in broad daylight she played with his affections plied them spikes from his heart she stood by pliers in hand he has his pride”. I will be discussing how the statement, “A serious function of poetry is to be awake in reality “ applies to these poems or if the statement does not apply to any of the poems.
In the poem “Digging”, the speaker is aware of what is going on around him. He is conscious of his surroundings and he does what he wants to do. His father digs, and his grandfather used to dig, but he is almost breaking the family tradition by not digging. His pen is like his spade, and he uses it to dig into the mind. He is trying to figure things out, trying to understand. The speaker in the poem also has a tone of respect for his father and his grandfather.
