Hard Ball, Soft Ball or Not at All...

Negotiation is a meeting between different groups of people in which a form of communication occurs. Negotiation is present in everyday life and at all levels of society. Thus, it is important to know the different types of negotiation and likewise know what technique we use ourselves to get what we want in life.

There are three major negotiation methods – hard, soft and principled. Hard negotiation methods are combative; the other party is always categorized as the enemy; and the primary objective is the results or to be the only winner. This method presupposes that there is only one possible outcome and only one possible winner.

Soft negotiation methods are peaceable; the other party is seen as a friend; and the main concern is with maintaining the relationship between the parties.
