Hamlet

Throughout Hamlet, a revenge tragedy by Shakespeare, the motif of spying developed. From the very beginning of the play, spying is present in many scenes. Many characters, such as Rosencrantz, Guilderstern, Claudius, and Polonious are spying on Hamlet to find out where his madness has come from. In return, Hamlet is spying on Claudius to prove he murdered his father, King Hamlet. Also, Laertes is being spied on while living in Paris by his father, Polonious. Spying throughout the play builds character and develops the plot and suspense.
At the start of the play, King Claudius discovers Fortinbras is making advances secretly toward Denmark. After learning of these advances, he decides to send his ambassadors, Cornelius and Voltimand to Norway in order to send a message to the King of Norway about his nephew’s secret and concealed actions. Claudius, the new King of Denmark is spying on Fortinbras by going behind his back to his elderly uncle.
