Haile Selassie

Haile Selassie himself did not come from a modest upbringing. He was born on July 17, 1892, in Ethiopia. His original name was Ras Tafari Makonnen. The heading Ras refers to the position of duke. Tafari was the cousin of Emperor Menelik II. Through his childhood he studied thouroley at the Addis Ababa court, and learned exercise power through superiority. At age twenty Emperor Menelik II appointed Selassie the Dezjamatch, or commander, of the Sidamo province. One year later, in 1913, Menelik died and left his throne to his Islamic grandson, Lij Yasu. Selassie disposed Lij Yasu in 1916, and Tafari became regent and heir. Menelek’s daughter, Zawditu, became emperess and began to transfer the Ethiopian religion to Muslim.
