Case study of the growth of Eastleigh
1. Physical Factors: In 1800 Eastleigh was a small farm on the edge of the village of Bishopstoke. Eastleigh or Eastlea as the farm was called was on the banks of the river Itchen, at the bottom of the wide flat Itchen valley. The farm was placed in an ideal position to receive slit from the river each year when it flooded and trade as the traders made there way from Southampton to Winchester and London. The farm was surrounded by trees from the New Forest. The Name Eastlea comes from old English meaning clearing of trees.
2. Economic Factors: The industrial Revolution affected Eastlea farm as it brought the railway with it. The railway company found that the best route for a line to Salisbury from London was to change at Eastlea or then it was know as Bishop...
