Gregory Hines 1946-2003 VS. The Epic Hero

“I don’t remember not dancing, when I realized I was alive and these were parents, and I could walk and talk, I could dance.”

Born in New York City on February 14 in 1946, Hines came of age in a period of rapid change for black Americans, both in terms of political rights and artistic freedoms. His parents saw dance not simply as a diversion, but as a way for their children to see beyond the constraints of a segregated existence. Hines started tapping almost before he could walk, commencing lessons at the age of two along with his older brother, Maurice. As soon as Gregory turned five, the brothers went professional as the Hines Kids, making night club appearances around the country and virtually growing up backstage at the Apollo theatre, where they witness to the performances and advice of tap dance legends like Honi Coles, Sandman Sims, and the Nicholas Brothers and Ted...
