Greek Philosopher: Plato

Plato was possibly one of the most popular of the ancient Greek philosophers. An apprentice to Socrates and instructor of Aristotle, Plato was born in Athens in 427B.C. to a wealthy family. The word Plato was a nickname, meaning broad-shouldered. Plato’s real name was Aristocles ( Taylor pg.9) I found that pretty interesting because of its closeness to the philosopher Aristotle. His birth father, Ariston, who died when Plato was still an infant, was said to have been descended by early kings of Athens. Plato's stepfather, Pyrilampes, was an associate to Greek politicians; and his mother, Perictione, was descended to early Greek law-makers.
I chose to write about Plato because I am intrigued by his thoughts on politics, especially in such times of these where politicians’ actions are questionable and under the constant scrutiny of the public to which they are sworn to serve.
