GREAT GATSBY

On the second page of the novel, Nick comments that Gatsby “represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn”. (2). Nick was referring to his disgust for the people and events he had encountered during that fateful summer. It is evident that Nick had conflicting and ambivalent feelings toward Gatsby. Nick both loved Gatsby and was critical of him. Nick was tolerant, but that toleration had limits. He hated Gatsby's crass and vulgar materialism. However, Nick also admired Gatsby for his dream, his "romantic readiness", and his "extraordinary gift for hope". Nick respected the romantic hope that motivated Gatsby to pursue his dreams. ...
