As future "monarchs of society," teenagers tend to beat their own drum and travel to a tune that is unknown by the rest of the world. Looking for the next adventure and seeking a right of passage, they live by a code all their own, pushing the limitations of adulthood and seeking an escape route from the boredom of childhood. Eventually, life decides to throw a few obstacles that may hinder the process of the carefree lifestyle in which they are accustomed. In "Greasy Lake" by Boyle, the narrator and his buddies begin to realize that being "bad" is sometimes not all it is cracked up to be. A night of drinking, smoking pot, girl watching, and listening to hard rock and roll which starts out as harmless fun, turns into the realization of the hard world that is out there.
